Happy 39th Anniversary Mom and Dad!

Leaving Park Place Luthern Church 39 years ago:

Mom and Dad,
Thank you for teaching us for better for worse, in sickness and in health, in poverty or in wealth, 'til death do us part. In you, we have witnessed selfless love and forsaking all others to remain true to each other as long as you both shall live. I know there have been some really hard times, but I'm more confident that when you were in that car driving away to Corpus Christi, you could not even imagine the things that God had prepared for you. We love you so much and hope you have a wonderful anniversary!

Lately...

I've been trying to establish some sort of a routine the last three weeks. One week into it, Jackson decided to change his routine, which meant that I had to change things up a bit. It hasn't been easy! My goal is to spend time in God's Word every morning before Jackson wakes up and before I start my day. I've also been trying to exercise consistently...something that I love to do but haven't done in a really long time. After I do those two things for myself, I've been trying to figure out how to best organize all of the other demands (playing with Jackson, spending time with Jace, cleaning, cooking, laundering clothes, shopping, maintaining friendships, etc.) and yet still leave room for the unexpected. I must confess that it's been a lot harder than I thought it would be and I am trying very hard to learn what is/is not important.

Well, due to all of that, I've put huge restraints on my computer time - it can be such a time stealer - which is why my blog has suffered lately. To catch you up, I'll just post a few random things that have been occurring lately:

Last Saturday, Jason put Jackson down for his nap while I ran errands and had some solo time at my favorite health food store. I never get to go alone, which makes it difficult to read and translate labels. I bought some wonderful food (quinoa, couscous, lentils, tahini, miso, flaxseed...), great tea (my new indulgence), and a germinator. I'm so excited about the germinator and am currently sprouting a mixture of radish, mung bean and wheat seeds to add to a salad. When I came home, this is what the boys were doing:

Later that night, Jason was giving Jackson a bath. Jackson always has to go to the bathroom right before his bath. If we aren't quick enough, he'll pee right on the floor. Otherwise, he just pees in the tub and then we have to drain the water and refill. Does this happen to anyone else?? Well, we decided that this would be an opportune time to put him on the toilet. We aren't trying to potty train. We just want him to be comfortable with sitting on the toilet. Normally, he never goes, but Saturday evening he actually did. I heard him, grabbed the camera, and got this shot:

When Jackson was little, he didn't seem to mind grass. Once he reached the stage when he could actually play in the grass, we were in Germany and it was way too cold to enjoy being outside. Spring rolled around, but from lack of exposure, he did not like the grass. He didn't even want to walk on it with his shoes on. If he touched it with his hands (accidentally, of course), he would pick up his hands really fast and whine while looking at his palms. I'm happy to say that those grass fears are gone:

Tuesday, Jackson and I were talking to my dad on the phone. We were in the guest room that we're in the process of changing to a study. I had to run to the kitchen to check on the bread, so I left Jackson sitting on the couch. When I came back, this is what I found:

Wednesday was a cleaning day. We vacuumed and mopped most of the house. While the floors were drying, we cleaned out Jackson's drawers to make room for his summer clothes. He loves to pull out and put away clothes. I gave him all of the old clothes and he put them in a big pile. I then gave him a basket to put them in. I went into another room to mop. I went back to check on him and he was still playing with his clothes so I continued cleaning. I'm not sure what he was doing, but it entertained him for a long time. He kept putting the clothes into odd places - like the bookshelf where we keep some of his toys and books. He'd stuff them on the shelf, then pull them back out, then put them in the basket, then try to put something on, then put them back on the shelf, etc. I really wish I could peek into his mind at times like that.

Highs and Lows

We had a wonderful Father's Day weekend. We played at the park, watched movies, and grilled...some of Jason's favorites! Here are some pictures we took after church on Sunday. We were lucky to get Jackson to look at the camera. He was so tired because we get home from church so late.

There is one thing that always makes him smile. Jackson is obsessed with driving the car!

On Monday, Jackson told me, "No!" for the first time. I didn't realize exactly what he was saying until he did it again on Tuesday. Needless to say, Tuesday was his first day in timeout. Our little man does not like to be separated from us, so timeouts seem to be very effective punishments thus far.

This evening, our family went to the pool and had a blast! The pools here are awesome. They have several indoor pools, water slides, several outdoor pools, a sauna, solarium and a restaurant. We spent our time indoors at the kiddie pool and then on the water slides. Jackson loved the slides. One slide was the winding tube kind but it was almost pitch black inside. It was called the black hole. Jackson loved, loved, loved this one. The other slide was very steep and shot you down into the water so fast. He loved this one too. We had so much fun! Jace and I had a blast going down the slides too. I can't even count how many times we went down!

Tonight, Jackson did the sweetest thing while we were putting him to bed. I was sitting in bed with him and Jason knelt by his bedside to pray. Jackson laid on his belly, clasped both hands together and said, "Jesus." He proceeded to make whispering sounds as if he were praying and then at one point grabbed my hand like we do when we pray before meals. It just melted our hearts!

Tomorrow, I'm looking forward to hanging out with Kate...a new friend who I have a lot in common with. We're hoping for good walking weather so we can put our boys in the joggers and go!

To the Best Daddy of Them All

Jace,
You've brought a whole new meaning to Father's Day. Since the day I knew that I was going to marry you, I dreamed of the day that we would have a child of our own...a child that would be a part of you and a part of me and an expression of our love for each other and for the Lord. I knew then that you would be an amazing father, and I eagerly anticipated watching you be Daddy to our child(ren).

A little more than 18 months ago, my dreams and expectations became a reality. I will never forget the day that Jackson was born. You held our baby with so much love and affection. When we brought him home and began life as a family of three, you were so attentive to his every need...warm wipes, diaper put on perfectly, no wrinkles/folds in his clothing or bed sheets to cause him discomfort, a warm bathing area, dim lights, etc. You did everything you could to spend time with him (and me) so that we would never question your love or loyalty to our family.

As the months went on, you did your best to be present for every one of Jackson's firsts. And that is still the case today as he is constantly experiencing new things and mastering new skills. Even though you are busy providing for our family, you make every effort to be a huge part of his life...something not all fathers do for their children. I am so grateful for your interest in our son. I am so thankful that you love him and want to develop a strong relationship with him that will endure for as long as you are on this earth. Every day, you make sacrifices so that we can have more time together as a family; but, that has never been clearer than now. I want you to know how much a admire you for walking away from your very successful career of ten years so that our family can avoid 14 months of separation. What a testimony of your devotion to God and of your desire to chase after the things of Him and not the things of this world.

Jace, I am having a blast with you! The Lord has done more in our 9 1/2 years as husband and wife than I could have ever asked or imagined. I can think of no greater partner to share my life with and not greater man to be Daddy to my children. Thank you for loving our Jackers! Thank you for loving our family! And thank you for loving me...I believe one of the greatest gifts you'll ever give our child(ren). I can't wait to have more!

My words never do justice to the gratitude I have for you. My heart is so full yet writing eloquently has never been a strength for this science/math girl. You are the man of my dreams! I knew it the first night I saw you. Jace, I love you, a lot, a lot! Happy 2nd Father's Day!

Two Faithful Father's

Dad,
My life has been forever blessed because God chose you as my father. You have set a tremendous legacy for our family. You've always put a HUGE emphasis on family, which has bound us so tightly together. During my junior high years, you followed God's leading and made the Lord the center of our family. I am so grateful for all of the "family time" we spent gathered together in our living room reading the Bible or other books and praying.

My entire life, you've worked SO hard to provide for our family. Life was not easy for you, but you made it very easy for the rest of us. From both you and Mom, I have had the most amazing examples of unselfishness. I have always respected your opinion and sought your counsel before making decisions. In return, you've encouraged me, supported me, and given me the freedom to go my own way.

We are alike in so many ways and our minds think a lot alike. Because of this, I can talk to you about anything and so easily. Since you got rid of your business and became more available, I have enjoyed the freedom to talk to you whenever I want. I have also loved having you more present in my life...like on the day that Jackson was born. Dad, I will never forget the pin that you wore to the hospital. It really made me smile:

It was just a visual reminder of your love for our family. Dad, I love you so much and am so thankful that God chose you to be my father. I hope your Father's Day is wonderful. I only wish that we could spend it with you. Happy Father's Day! I am the daughter of a truly amazing father!

My other father...given to me only for a time...but a part of my heart forever:
Jason's dad went to live in eternal glory on 31 July 2003. We've never missed someone so much since that day. He was a tremendous person in so many ways and loved his family with all of his heart, giving of himself to provide for their every need. We miss him incredibly and wish that he was here with us, but we are grateful that he is with Jesus forever and ever.

Fantastic Friday

Today has been such a wonderful day! The women of my church are doing a summer Bible reading challenge. We are reading through Luke, Acts and all of the NT epistles. Our pastor's wife put everything together and has given us a daily reading assignment for each day. We just started on Wednesday. My goal is to be in God's Word each morning before the rest of my house awakes. I would love to establish this discipline now before, Lord willing, my family grows.

This morning, I spent time reading in 1 Corinthians. I must say, it is absolutely incredible what the Lord does with my heart and mind when I start my day with Him. It's a little embarrassing that I'm just now figuring this out...or rather taking action with what I've known to be true. My prayer is that this would be a lasting discipline - unlike all of the other times I've set out to do my "quiet time". Honestly, I don't want this to be about checking a box on my "Good Christian To-Do List". And I am hopeful because I don't feel that way at all. God has really been changing my time with Him since I started my study of James back in February, courtesy of my friend Sheri.

Speaking of Sheri, that is the second highlight of this fantastic day. Jackson and I went to the post office to see if our Father's Day package had arrived. It did not, but I was pleasantly surprised to find a package from my friend Sheri who recently moved from Germany back to the States. Inside was a Bible study on Esther for us to complete together and have accountability over the phone or through email. She also put a very cute bookmark inside the book. Then, as if that wasn't enough, she sent Jackson a great pair of jeans and an awesome blue button-down shirt. I can't wait to see him in it because blue is his best color. I've been wanting to take some photos of him since he's 18 months old. I think this shirt will be perfect!

Sheri is an unbelievable friend. God put her in my life when I really needed a female companion with whom to share my struggles and my victories as a follower of Christ, a wife, and a new mommy. Her package today made me feel so loved and appreciated by her as a friend.

After the post office, Jackson and I went to the playground. We haven't been in about a month because of all of our traveling and then spending most days at home recuperating and getting back into a routine. The last time we were at the playground, he wanted me to hold his hand while he slid down the slide. Today, while I was drying one slide (with the newspaper stuffing from Sheri's package!), I caught him out of the corner of my eye as he was sliding, on his bottom and not on his belly, down another slide! When he got to the bottom, he squealed with delight! I was so excited and cheered him on. He proceeded to do this tons more times until the rain came and we hurried to the car. Each time he reached the bottom, he would say, "Yeah!" We were both so proud! (And this was the one day I didn't bring my camera or video camera.)

Later, while Jackson napped, I mowed the lawn for Jason. I love mowing the lawn but rarely get to because it is Jason's job (and he's insistent upon it being HIS job). It was a prelude to my Father's Day thankfulness.

After dinner, Jackson was Chatty McChatterson. We took advantage of it by asking him if he could say a bunch of different words...one being Jackson, which we shortened to Jack. And he said it! Jackson said, "Jack"! We then tried explaining, in a way that he would understand, that Jack is his name. It was so much fun!

Now, Jason is putting Jackson to bed and I'm blogging about our great day while our tea steeps. Putting Jackers to bed has always been my thing. I think Jace has only put him to bed 2 times and both times were because I was gone (I'm not counting the newborn days when he slept constantly). Now that he's getting older, I don't want him to think that he can't go to sleep without Mommy being there. It's a little sad for me because it means that he's growing up; however, I feel it's best for him and for me. Plus, I know there are going to be times in the future when I can't put him to bed. We're just trying to prepare for those nights now. From the sound of it, everything is working beautifully!

Have a happy Father's Day weekend! Good night!

Well, I now have to add one more thing that makes today even better: I just purchased our airline tickets for our trip to Houston in September! Jackson and I leave on the 12th and Jason joins us on the 19th just in time for his younger sister's wedding. I can't wait! The best part: we don't leave until 9 October because Jason will be doing job-search stuff and interviews. That's almost an entire month for me and Jackson!! I can't wait to see everyone!

Things That Make Me Smile

Walking in Daddy's shoes:

Out of town guests:

Russ, Jason's friend from college, was in town while his plane was being fixed. We were blessed to have him over on Friday night and Sunday. I thoroughly enjoyed cooking for a guest, chatting until midnight, and playing games. Jace and I rarely get to do this kind of thing so it was a real treat!

Happy 9th Anniversary Jonathan and Melissa!

Today is my sister Melissa and her husband Jonathan's 9th wedding anniversary. They met in 1995 and are perfectly suited for one another. They have three precious boys, ages 6, 1, and almost 3 months.

Happy Anniversary Jon and Melissa! We love you!
